Telegraph publishes rapist's picture after police refuse to help

A vicious rapist has been pictured in the Grimsby Telegraph – despite a refusal by police to provide a photograph.

Terence Maver (38) was jailed for nine years at Lincoln Crown Court after terrorising a schoolteacher in her own home. The court heard that Maver, who wore a mask and brandished a knife during the attack, had previous convictions for indecent assault and indecent exposure.

Judge Richard Hutchinson told him he had subjected the woman to “a terrible ordeal.”

But when the Telegraph asked Humberside Police to release a photograph, they refused, saying it went against “protocol regarding sex offenders.”

They said they were concerned about the possible consequences when Maver was finally released back into the community. Police said they were worried about the picture being used after his release despite an assurance from the Telegraph that this would not happen.

In a comment piece the following night under the headline “Police refuse to release picture of terror rapist”, the Telegraph asked for the public’s opinion on the publication of such photographs.

Within hours, a number of calls had been received, including one from a former partner of Maver’s who related how he abused her sexually and violently during their relationship.

And she handed over a photograph of him to the Telegraph because she believed “his picture should be shown.”

Editor Peter Moore said: “We felt very strongly that a photograph of Maver should have been made available. The victim’s life has been ruined because of his actions. We believed the public had a right to see this man and that he and others like him should not be protected in this way.”

The Telegraph has an ongoing campaign to persuade Humberside Police to release photographs of convicted criminals who have committed serious crimes.
