Suspect gives himself up after seeing his picture in print

A robber who attacked a security guard with a claw hammer and fled with £60 gave himself up to police after his picture appeared in the Evening Post.

He was caught on a CCTV camera as he raided the Texaco Star service station.

But after the Post ran the story and showed his picture he handed himself in.

The robber was jailed for four-and-a-half years at Nottingham Crown Court after admitting robbery and assault.

In court, Richard Jones, defending, said: “He realised what he did was wrong and after seeing himself in the media, had the courage to go to the police and be totally open about it.”

The police praised the Post for helping jail Watson, when investigating officer PC Ian Spence said: “This was a good example of the press helping the police to deal with a crime.”
