Staff in scuffle with protesters

Bristol Evening Post workers found themselves on the front line rather than the front page when dozens of protesters burst into the paper’s city centre headquarters.

Reporters, photographers and receptionists fought to restrain the Reclaim the Streets protesters until police arrived.

Two protesters were arrested for breach of the peace offences following the disturbance at around midday on Monday.

Three police cars and a riot van were called after a dozen people marched into reception banging drums and chanting.

They handed out leaflets to office staff and customers, protesting about a story on the front page of last Friday’s paper. The report told of the middle-class background of a man arrested during last year’s Reclaim the Streets demonstrations.

The group forced open doors, banged drums and marched across desks. They refused to leave when asked by security staff and police were called.

Speaking after the arrests, one of the protesters refused to comment on the reasons behind the demonstration but handed over a mock Evening Post headed “Lies, Damned Lies”.
