Stadium bid backed by readers

A scheme to get Shrewsbury Town football club into a new stadium received a shot in the arm when public opinion was tested in the Shropshire Star.

The results of a poll showed 69 per cent of 8,000 replies were in favour of the club moving to a new ground near Meole Brace.

The newspaper has teamed up with Shrewsbury Borough Council for the consultation where residents gave their views on three questions surrounding one of the hottest issues to hit the town for years.

The council is facing the option of going into a £5m deal with Shrewsbury Town in a deal that would not only create a new stadium but new homes on 40 acres at the same site.

Council leader Danny Moore said: “We have been happy to join forces with the Shropshire Star on what is a matter of great public interest.

“This is not a referendum but gives cabinet members a good indication of what people think when we meet to consider the proposal in more detail in September.”

The overwhelming support for the scheme, in a poll that attracted 7,838 completed questionnaires, should help the decision-making.
