A reporter from the Press and Journal scooped a top singing prize at the Royal National Mod, a festival of Gaelic language, arts and culture.

Eilidh Davies, who works in the paper’s Highland office, won the Lochewe Branch Cup and a gold medal for her rendition of The Emmigrant’s Song.

The 27-year-old is also an accomplished clarsach harp player and has taken top prizes at previous Mods in the instrumental classes.

This time she decided to switch to solo singing in the class for first prize winners in provincial competitions.

Eilidh also sings with Inverness Gaelic Choir, which won the prestigious Lovat and Tullibardine Shield at this year’s Royal National Mod.

In 2005 she won the Kennedy-Fraser Cup at the festival and came runner-up in two other competitions, and in 2000 she won the silver pendant at the event in Dunoon.
