Sales boost as Scottish daily fills up newsstands in Spain

Glasgow’s daily title the Evening Times sold 4,000 copies in Barcelona during Rangers FC’s Champions League excursion there.

And readers are still clamouring for copies of the paper’s two special editions which were sold across the Catalan capital.

Rangers were in Barcelona for the crunch group tie with the footballing giants which they lost 2-0.

An estimated 20,000 Rangers fans went over for the game and to soak up the local sangria, presenting the Evening Times with a unique sales opportunity.

The exercise proved so successful for the paper that they would consider repeating it if the same amount of fans travelled with either Rangers or Celtic into Europe.

Newspaper sales manager Malcolm MacDonald said that 2,000 copies were sold on match day with pages of build-up to the game.

This was followed by another 2,000 the following day with picture spreads of fans at the stadium.

Malcolm said: “We are still actually selling them as fans have come home and realised their picture was in the paper.

“Celtic are playing AC Milan in the Champions League but Rangers took 20,000 fans with them.

“Celtic are maybe taking 5,000 fans with them.

“If the numbers get up to the 20,000 again, by all means, we would be looking to repeat it but it was a bit of a one-off.”

The paper, which normally sells for 40p, was on sale at over 60 venues across the city for €2 – approximately £1.40. There also were English-speaking vendors who had been recruited locally. Do you have a story about the regional press?
