Reporter takes on prestigious town role

Lowestoft Journal chief reporter Terry Reeve has been installed as the new Town Reeve of his home town of Bungay.

The town is the only place in the UK still retaining the office of Town Reeve and Terry (pictured) previously took on the prestigious role in 1997.

The Town Reeve heads the Town Trust, which until the early part of the 20th century was the main administrative body. The role is believed to date back to Saxon times.

Each year the outgoing Reeve chooses the new Reeve from the feoffees (trustees) of the Town Trust. As well as heading the Trust the office involves representing Bungay at events around the county.

Terry said he was surprised to be asked to take on the role again so soon.

He said: “The feeling is the same as on the last occasion – one of honour at being able to serve the town you love in this way, in this ancient and unique role, and the feeling of humility when you think of the illustrious and noble men and women who have filled it over the centuries.

“All I can promise is that I will do my utmost to fill the role with the dignity and honour that it deserves.”

Terry recently completed 40 years unbroken service with Archant, and has worked at the company’s Lowestoft office for the past seven years.
