Reporter stranded in China

The horrific terrorist attacks on America are continuing to have repercussions all over the world, as one intrepid Western Daily Press reporter is finding out.

Susie Weldon flew out to Tibet just days before the September 11 attacks to cover David Hempleman-Adams’ solo balloon attempt.

But the exciting trip has turned into a nightmare for both of them as they have been left grounded in more ways than one.

David’s attempt to fly solo over the Himalayas in the Cadbury Everest Challenge had to be postponed after the Chinese government tightened security and closed down air space following the attacks.

Now his team along with reporter Susie, are stranded in China trying to get a flight home.

The Western Daily Press said it is hoped they will be given the go-ahead to fly back to the UK by the end of the week.

Susie had been sent out to cover the first ever solo balloon flight over Everest travelling from Tibet to Nepal.

She has been staying at the team’s base camp 16,000ft up the Himalayas awaiting the now cancelled record attempt on September 20.

A Team Cadbury spokesman said: “It is understood in this time of increased security, particularly regarding airspace, that any loss of contact or communication with the Cadbury Challenge balloon during the flight could prove a security and safety risk.

“Team Cadbury fully appreciates and respects this decision.”

The trip has been blighted by other problems as well, with several parts of the roads washed away by unusual monsoon conditions as they made their trip to the Rongbuk Monastery base camp.

It is hoped the event will be resceduled for a later date.
