Regional staff set for D-Day anniversary trip

Regional press staff from around the country are set to travel to Normandy next week to cover events taking place to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Dozens of newspapers are planning to send reporters and photographers out to France on June 5 and 6.

These will include the Yorkshire Post, Western Morning News, Southern Daily Echo, Liverpool Echo, Plymouth Evening Herald, Leicester Mercury, Dorset Echo, Newcastle Journal, Western Daily Press, Lincolnshire Echo, Torquay Herald Express, Slough Observer and Aldershot News.

Many news staff will travel with groups of veterans from their circulation area to get a local perspective on the proceedings.

And the Newspaper Society has been liaising with the Ministry of Defence to ensure regional press staff are allocated passes to the key events.

More than 20,000 veterans and their supporters are expected to travel to France to take part in commemorative events, the highlight of which is expected to be the Normandy Veterans Association Farewell March-Past in Arromanches, which will be attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
