Rebel supporters force football tribute rethink

Readers are getting in touch with the Aberdeen Evening Express in their hundreds after the newspaper was scuppered in its bid to publish the details of every season ticket holder at the city’s main football club.

Six rebel supporters claimed they would take action under the Data Protection Act if their names were printed – forcing the paper to hold fire on a centenary pull-out tribute to Aberdeen FC.

The football club and the Evening Express are now working together to get as many names as they can from the original 8,000-strong list to publish.

A special coupon has been printed in the paper for season ticket holders to return, granting their permission, or they can contact the club direct.

The date for the eight-page supplement, originally planned for August 23, is now scheduled for this Saturday. The bumper tribute will include photos from recent games, articles on the club’s history.

Supporters’ clubs spokesman Alan Duncan said: “A lot of Dons fans wanted to have their names included on the official centenary shirts but couldn’t afford the £1,000 fee. Now they can have their loyalty to the Dons recorded for ever – for free.

“It’s a great idea and I would have expected season ticket holders to be more worried about their names being left out.”

The supplement will form a lasting tribute with a photographic negative of the page being turned into a copper plaque to be erected at the football club.
