Readers' views wanted for culture bid

Readers of a Yorkshire paper are being asked for their ideas on how to stake their claim as the next European Capital of Culture.

The Bradford Telegraph & Argus is teaming up with Bradford Council to launch the massive public consultation exercise.

A selection of the best ideas will be used to form the backbone of Bradford’s application to be the European Capital of Culture in 2008.

That is when the prestigious title will return to the UK for the first time since 1990.

Competition comes from Milton Keynes, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol and Newcastle.

Editor Perry Austin Clarke said: “It is vital that people get involved in this consultation.

“Simply being part of the bidding process is an important step for Bradford because it provides a fantastic opportunity for change.

“We want to hear people’s ideas for the city – no matter how big or small, how grandiose or simple.

“We hope that as ideas come forward and the bid comes together, people will feel a renewed pride in the district and be determined to help the bid succeed.”

The final bid must be submitted by March 2002 and the prime minister will pick a winner the following spring.
