Wales’ oldest publishing house is to close later this week after nearly 150 years in business.

Gwasg Gee in Denbigh was founded mid way through the 19th century by Thomas Gee.

He took over from his father’s business which was set up in 1808 and he soon began creating one Europe’s finest printing presses.

In 1857, the Y Faner newspaper was formed and ran until just 10 years ago.

This publication was the backbone of the company as it reached as many as 100,000 readers in Wales during its peak.

Now the retirement of managing director Emlyn Evans, (77), means that Gwasg Gee will close permanently with the loss of six jobs.

Mr Evans said: “It is with great sadness that this establishment has been forced to close.”

It is hoped that a new national printing museum will be located in Denbigh in the near future.
