Praise in Parliament for investigative reporter's work

East London Advertiser deputy editor Ted Jeory has been praised in Parliament for his investigative reporting skills after uncovering the collapse of a money transfer company.

The events at First Solution could leave thousands of creditors out of pocket to the tune of almost £2m.

MP George Galloway praised the investigation as he called on the Government for assistance in raising money for those who have lost out.

His constituency covers Tower Hamlets, where the firm was based.

Ted said: “We broke the story and it has since been picked up by Radio 4’s You and Yours, Five Live’s ‘Wake up to Money’, BBC London evening bulletins, The Guardian, The Times and the Mirror.

“We splashed two weeks running on the story which has affected thousands of locals. Our second splash contained a two-page special investigation report.

“I used to be a city accountant for nine years before swapping numbers for words and joining Archant in March 2003. My numbers background enabled me to plough through much of the detail here and come up with a stream of new leads.”

Some of the worst hit featured in the Advertiser, including one man who lost £70,200 after re-mortgaging his home in Stoke on Trent to send back cash for his family to build a house in Bangladesh.

Another victim lost money he had saved for retirement back in Bangladesh and another man lost money he had saved for a whole year to buy essential medical treatment for his brother.

Ted was promoted to deputy editor from chief reporter at the Archant weekly title last month and joined the Advertiser from the East Anglian Daily Times in September 2005.
