The Gloucester Citizen has reproduced as posters its front page showing the photo of a new born baby abandoned in a shopping bag.

Police hope the poster campaign will prompt the mother, believed to be from the area, to come forward and claim her ‘baby in a bag’, as the youngster has been dubbed.

The Citizen has handed dozens of copies of the front page to police to put up around a Gloucester shopping area near where the baby, who is being called Benjamin, was found.

Det Sgt Dave Sellwood said: “The Citizen’s front page with the picture of the baby is pretty emotive and we hope to tug at the heart strings.

“We believe the mother to be local and someone knows something.

“They may not know that a particular indivdual has given birth, but people will know that someone has been ill or has not been seen for some time.”

He stressed the mother had not committed an offence.
