Popular Echo sub Derek Chapman has died

Lincolnshire Echo sports sub Derek Chapman has died, aged 58, after a short illness.

Derek, who joined the Echo in 1988, died in his sleep at Lincoln County Hospital on Saturday.

He started his 40-year career in journalism at the New Daily Newspaper in London in 1963 and worked on a wide variety of publications, including the Daily Mirror.

Derek (left) also wrote for the Meat Trades Journal and for the National Farmers’ Union.

In his time at the Echo, he worked in the news, features and sport departments.

A staunch supporter of Arsenal Football Club, he was also a qualified FA coach.

Echo editor Mike Sassi said: “Derek was a valued and popular member of staff who will be missed by all his friends and colleagues.

“Our thoughts are with his wife Jackie and his family.”
