Politician attacks readers

The Scunthorpe Telegraph and its readers have been attacked by a councillor who took exception to what was printed in the paper.

He claimed the paper made up its headlines and the readers didn’t bother looking at the stories.

Coun Alan Smith was upset at coverage of North Lincolnshire Council’s housing repair service.

He told Winterton Town Council, which he also sits on: “The good things that we do are never reported.

“They do make up their own headlines, even The Guardian writes rubbish sometimes.”

And he went on to complain about the readers, saying: “What the press do is put the headline. People don’t read the story. They just assume.”

The comments were made after the paper reported on a housing meeting, where it was revealed the Audit Commission has branded the housing repair service “poor” and awarded no stars for quality.

An independent survey, however, found 83 per cent of council tenants were happy with the service.
