Sentinel picture editor retires

One of the Stoke Sentinel’s longest-serving employees has retired.

Trevor Slater has left his role as the paper’s picture editor after working in the photographic department for almost 42 years.

Trevor, (57), joined the then Evening Sentinel in January 1960 as a junior photographer.

At the age of 24 he became deputy picture editor under Huston Spratt, and when he retired 11 years ago he took over as picture editor.

During his career, Trevor has photographed many stars, including Richard Attenborough and Julie Andrews. He has also won awards for his work, including one for a picture taken by chance.

Sent home from work due to bad weather, he found a policeman pushing a car in deep snow and captured the moment for the front page of the Sentinel.

Reflecting on his time at the Sentinel, Trevor said: “The best part of my job wasn’t necessarily the photography. I’ve met and worked with talented people who are friends as well as colleagues.

“There aren’t many jobs where you can come into contact with people from so many different walks of life.”

Trevor was presented with a digital video camera and a framed copy of a Sentinel front page marking his career.
