Press photographers' work used for mayors' mementos

The Swindon Evening Advertiser has presented commemorative photo albums to two of the town’s mayors as a souvenir of their time in office.

The special mementos, which contain pictures taken by photographers from the Evening Advertiser, were presented to councillors Arthur Archer and David Cox by chief photographer Dave Evans.

Dave said: “The albums started off as cuttings books and developed from there. We see it as a nice tradition.”

Included in Coun Archer’s album, who served as mayor in 2000/1, are photographs of him receiving the British Glass Award from industry mascot Billy Bottle, and him being “arrested” by Swindon police to raise money for cancer research.

His successor, Coun Cox, was snapped playing the part of an Ugly Sister for a production of Cinderella and also carving the meat at a newly opened Swindon carvery.

Coun Archer said: “It is a very nice record.”
