Press man's 25 years in the frame

A Bristol photographer is celebrating 25 years of taking news pictures for a regional daily paper.

Fran Stothard, (50), began working for the Western Daily Press in 1977.

He has captured many memorable images during his career, including some from a large number of royal visits over the years.

During the Queen’s visit to Bridgwater in 1987, he was given a one-off opportunity for a memorable shot when her train was delayed.

The train was due to set off and the dignitaries were waiting to wave her goodbye, but the train didn’t move and as she looked out of the door, looking quite amused, Fran managed to capture the moment.

Fran said: “The picture of the Queen was quite fun – it was something different. We’ve done so many Royal Family pictures over the years, but one like that is a bit special.”

“I also particularly like the Fergie one. It was the first time her and Prince Andrew had been out before they got married.”

Fran believes the essential skills for successful news photography are a good eye and lightning-flash reactions.

He said: “The one thing about this job is that you have to be there when the event happens, so you can be up at any time of the day or night.

“You have to be quick enough to catch the moment before it passes.”

Even after 25 years at the paper, Fran still gets a buzz from seeing his pictures in print.

He said: “As long as they are good, it is great to see them appearing in the paper the next day. It is so instantaneous.

“I love the freedom and the variety is wonderful. You get to meet people from all walks of life and it never gets repetitive. It really is a great job.”
