Peter Dash, chief examiner and chairman of the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ photography board, said: “Special mention must be made of the award winners whose images captured the essence of our profession.
“The Nikon Award for Best Single Image was a sports picture by Matthew Page of The Sentinel, Stoke, which we felt was a strong image that could be published anywhere in context.”
Peter added: “Matthew was also awarded the South Wales Argus Advance Project award for his photographic presentation design and story about the graffiti controversy, making him a double award winner.
“The Fuji Award for Best Portfolio, which went to Kate Howell of The Argus, Brighton, was a stream of consistently high standard images which met every criterion that we demand including a ‘hard news’ picture of John Prescott wearing yet another hat and a fashion picture which would grace the pages of just about any magazine in the world.”
Eleven candidates sat the photography NCE at Sheffield College, Norton on November 8.
