Former regionals man scoops award for humanitarian pics

Former East Anglian Daily Times photographer Nicky Lewin has scooped a top award in an international competition for humanitarian photography.

Nicky, who now works as a freelance, has been awarded first prize in the ‘Disaster Response and Refugees’ category of the contest run by US-based international development and humanitarian organisation InterAction.

His photograph of Ethiopians drinking from a newly-installed water pipe (below), which he took while on an assignment for CARE International, was among the winning images in seven categories.

  • He also picked up second place in the ‘job skills’ category.

Nicky will collect his award during the InterAction Forum in Washington later this month.

His winning photographs will be among those on display at the four-day event, which he has also been hired to cover.

Former lifeguard Nicky was a staff photographer at the East Anglian Daily Times for ten years before going freelance in 2001.

During his career he has won several awards, including twice being named BT London and Northern Home Counties Photographer of the Year.
