Exhibition will show award-winning pictures

Award-winning photographs from the Picture Editors’ Awards 2003 are to go on display at a London exhibition – as a curtain-raiser to a new book that will bring striking photographic work to a wider audience.

Getty Images Gallery is hosting an exhibition of the work from Britain and Ireland’s leading awards for photographic journalism.

The exhibition, which runs between June 7 and 21, will also showcase images from a forthcoming book, Momento, which features award-winning photography from Getty Images.

This is the first time that winning entries from the Picture Editors’ Awards, representing the cream of British and Irish news and magazine photography, have been on public display.

Getty Images chairman Mark Getty said: “This exhibition offers a striking demonstration of the sheer quality and diversity of images that have come from photojournalists in the UK and Ireland in the past 12 months.

“Many of them have defined key moments from 2002, and have been seen not just here but around the world.”

The exhibition will include work from Jeff Mitchell of Reuters, who was named 2003 Fujifilm Photographer of the Year and Nikon Sports Photographer of the Year; Ian Rutherford of The Scotsman, the Getty Images Regional Photographer of the Year; Matthew Austin – Express & Echo, Exeter, the Diageo Young Photographer of the Year and Ian Waldie, Getty Images, who won The Guinness Award for Best Black and White Photograph.

A selection of images from The Daily Mirror and Glasgow’s Sunday Herald – winners of the Getty Images Newspapers of the Year Award – will also be included.

  • The book Momento will be available for purchase from June 18.
  • The exhibition, at 3 Jubilee Place, Chelsea, is open from Saturday June 7 to Saturday June 21, between 10am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 12pm and 6pm on Saturday.
