100 press photos in new exhibition

An exhibition with a difference is currently on display – featuring images taken by the entire Lincolnshire Echo photographic department.

The nine-strong team spent a year preparing for the event before it opened this week.

A Year of Lincolnshire features 100 black and white A4 mounted photographs and promises an insight into the ordinary and extraordinary as seen through the eyes of the Echo photographic team in 2003.

Picture editor Stuart Wilde said: “Some of the photographs have previously appeared in the Echo, while others have been especially shot with the exhibition in mind.

“We are in a privileged position, dipping into peoples’ lives and often meeting people at their highest and lowest points, and I thought these kind of extremes would make for an interesting collection.

“This project has a labour of love for the whole team and they have even been helping with promotion and mounting the pictures in their spare time.

“I had the idea for an exhibition giving a summary of the year last January and since then everyone has been putting their best pictures in a folder. We had about 400 and edited those down to 100.”

Chief photographer Roy Ealden said the exhibition had provided the team with the opportunity to show off their favourite photographs which don’t necessarily make it in to the Echo.

He said: “This is a way of resolving our frustration. I have worked at the Echo for 20 years and have held my own exhibitions but have never been involved in anything like this.”

Senior photographer Ian Jubb added: “We were trying to come up with ways to boost the profile of the department and Stuart had the idea of an exhibition. It’s been good to get involved in something different and we hope people will come and see it.”

The exhibition will run at Lincoln Central Library in Free School Lane from January 13 to 24th and entry is free. The collection will then be on display at the Echo offices.
