Liberal Democrats are making life easy for journalists covering the Romsey by-election.

They have produced a pocket-sized media guide that lists local industries and past election results and gives a potted summary of the constituency.

One hundred of the 20-page guides have been printed.

For journalists with an eye on their expense accounts, the guide lists restaurants and hotels, as well as rail services and taxi firms.

The tactic has quickly paid off, earning a page lead in the Southern Daily Echo’s coverage of the run-up to the May 4 contest.

A Lib Dem worker told reporter Greg Hurst that the guide was “very helpful….not full of pages and pages of rubbish, just the essentials”.

Greg warns readers to watch out for newspapers that describe the constituency as “an eclectic mix of areas” – a quote straight out of the guide.
