Two local newspapers have come to the rescue and recovered valuable items after appeals by their readers.

Following Southampton Football Club’s last game at their ground, The Dell, a valuable oil painting was stolen from the supporters’ club.

The picture, depicting the Saints first team, is worth around £12,000 and the team was desperate to get it back when it was taken as the stadium closed its doors after 103 years.

Bar manager Yves Adelbrecht made an appeal for the return of the precious painting in the Southern Daily Echo.

He was overjoyed, when following the appeal, the painting was returned.

He said: “We had an anonymous phone call from another fan saying they knew where it was and they were going to get it returned.

“We got another anonymous phone call about 10.50pm and they said it was regarding the picture, it was outside the front and then we went out there it was out there, not a scratch on it.”

The Lancashire Evening Telegraph also gave a helping hand when Coronation Street star Vicky Entwistle had her rings stolen.

The rings, which Vicky designed herself, were stolen while she visited a tanning centre.

After an appeal in the Telegraph they were handed in at her parents’ Accrington newsagents.

PC Jane Lawrenson said a woman handed the rings in and waived any right to the £300 reward put up by the actress.

PC Lawrenson said: “If the Lancashire Evening Telegraph had not described them in so much detail and given it prominence they would not have been handed in.”
