Paper's archives trawled for nostalgic book

The Stoke Sentinel’s photographic archives have been trawled to produce a new book about life in the Potteries in the 1950s.

The Way We Were in the 1950s has been put together by veteran columnist John Abberley.

John has been working in journalism and broadcasting in North Staffordshire for 50 years and produces the paper’s monthly nostalgia magazine The Way We Were.

The 144-page book contains almost 200 photographs from the 1950s and includes the work of prominent photographers such as Ernest Warrillow, Tom Woodward and Huston Spratt, all of whom spent their working lives with the newspaper.

John said: “When we started producing The Way We Were 13 years ago, we soon found that there was a big audience in North Staffordshire for nostalgia in all its forms.

“This book chronicles the 1950s and we have many more ideas and directions which we can take, including more decades.”

  • The book, priced £7.95, is available from all Sentinel offices and local book shops.
