Oxford weekly rallies fans for United's crunch match

The Oxford Courier Journal is rallying Oxford United supporters as the team’s fight to retain its football league status comes down to the final game of the season.

The U’s play host to promotion chasing Leyton Orient this Saturday – and only a win will give them a chance of staying in League Two.

And to help their cause, the weekly paper has printed posters which it is asking fans to take with them to the game.

Group editor Lawrence Webb said: “It will be as important for us as a cup final or being in the play-offs.

“It’s pretty major for the city as well as for our newspaper. Our back pages get a lot of nice stories from Oxford United – obviously we’ll still get them if they’re in the Conference, it just won’t be quite as exciting.

“Leyton Orient are streets ahead of Oxford as they’re fighting for promotion. But Oxford are fighting for survival and hopefully that survival instinct will get them through.”

Superstitious fans will be especially on edge – because if Oxford lose, they will be replaced in League Two by Conference champions Accrington Stanley, the very team Oxford replaced in 1962 when they were last promoted to the football league.
