Online tributes pour in for Islander

Tributes to British Superbike champion Steve Hislop have been pouring in to the website for Isle of Man Newspapers following the star’s tragic death in a helicopter crash last week.

Originally from Scotland, the 11-times TT winner had lived on the Isle of Man since 1991, and following news of his death an online book of condolences was quickly set up at Isle of Man Online.

The sporting hero had also won the British Superbike title twice.

Reporter John Gregory said: “Steve was extremely well-known on the Island.

“I have interviewed him many times over the past three years and he was a pleasure to speak to and a very nice bloke.

“Obviously the Island is a tight-knit place and a lot of people knew him or knew of him. He was a great family man and will be sadly missed.”

The website, which carries news from the Isle of Man Courier, Isle of Man Examiner and Manx Independent, has since been the focus for outpourings of grief and messages from all over the world.

John said: “We’ve had a fantastic response from all sectors of the community and from people all over the world, from the Island, the UK and beyond.

“Everyone seems to have their own Steve Hislop anecdote and the tributes are continuing to pour in.”
