Notts paper adds Robin Hood to masthead in redesign of paper

The Nottingham Evening Post has unveiled a new masthead, marking the culmination of a six-month redesign of the paper.

The new design incoporates an image of Robin Hood and the words ‘Nottingham City of Legends’, in what is only the fourth change to the masthead since the paper’s launch in 1878.

The Evening Post’s story count has also been tripled and more white space has been created to make the paper easier to read.

Editor Malcolm Pheby said he had tried to “invigorate” the paper since taking on his role in October.

He said Robin Hood had been chosen as the centrepiece to the masthead as he was a champion of the people and a local legend.

The final product was a collaboration between staff at the Evening Post and Nottingham design company 23red central, which submitted a number of designs on the Robin Hood theme.

Malcolm said: “The reason that we chose Robin Hood was because everyone in Nottinghamshire identifies so well with him, and the entire world identifies him with our city and county.

“There is also a real heart and a real strength to Robin.”

  • As part of the ongoing changes the paper has also changed its colour pallet, swapping primary colours for earthy, pastel shades, and introduced a serif face to its sans headline fonts.

Malcolm said: “The result is a more readable paper and we have had very positive feedback.

“We have trebled the story count by using the same space differently, meaning we can give wider coverage of our geographical area.

“We have also made sure that we reflect the positive.

“Nottingham has been dubbed ‘Shottingham’ and the gun capital of the UK, but it is so easy to find stories about achievement here.

    “Nottingham is a superb city.”
