Northcliffe given green light for purchase

A Welsh newspaper is set to change hands after the competition minister agreed to the move.

Northcliffe Newspapers has been given permission to buy the Neath and Port Talbot Tribune from Tindle Newspapers.

Northcliffe already owns the weekly Neath and Port Talbot Courier, which is published by South West Wales Publications.

Minister Melanie Johnson said: “I have considered the application carefully, including the views of third parties.

“In coming to a decision I reviewed all relevant issues, including competition, concentration of ownership and the need for accurate presentation of news and free expression of opinion.”

The permission will last for a year and if the sale has not gone through by then, the minister would have to review the decision.

The Tribune is a monthly free sheet, which Northcliffe hopes will complement its existing South Wales portfolio.
