When Joanne Trenoweth was just a youngster she was impressed to see next-door neighbour Nigel Salmon drive home in a top-of-the-range road test car.
At the time Nigel was the motoring correspondent of The Cornishman.
Joanne asked him if he would drive her to her wedding in a posh car like it one day, and Nigel agreed.
Twenty years later – in the middle of the recent petrol crisis – bride-to-be Joanne asked Nigel to make good on his word.
Nigel, now a sub-editor and motoring editor at The West Briton, told The Cornishman: “I’d forgotten about it to be honest.”
Unfortunately, his current motor is a Ford Transit. But a local garage came up trumps and after Nigel explained his problem they were happy to lend a three-litre S-type Jaguar worth more than £30,000.
Nigel was happy to act as chauffeur for Joanne and new husband Steve George.
But, slipping back into his professional role, Nigel said: “Somebody at the garage said they got 20 mpg out of the car but the on-board computer told me we only averaged 15.4 that day.”
