Newsrooms react to NY air crash tragedy

Regional newspapers across the country took their chance to beat the nationals and publish news of the latest New York air crash in special editions or late print runs on Monday.

As news came in of the tragedy, which claimed more than 250 lives, editors made the decision to run with what details had already emerged to give their readers a first bite at the breaking story.

Among those that ran the presses late were the Sheffield Star, which altered its City edition on the print run to accommodate the news, and the Hull Daily Mail, which produced two special editions that were on the street by 4pm.

The Express & Echo in Exeter launched an extra print run to hit the streets at around 4.30pm, while the Bristol Evening Post published extra copies to carry the news.

The story made the Liverpool Echo’s late edition run of 10,500 without delaying the print run and the Gloucestershire Echo had an extra, late edition at the printers by 4pm.

The Lincolnshire Echo’s special edition was on the press at 3.50pm in a run that produced 3,000 extra copies.

Editor Mike Sassi said: “We made the decision to do an extra print run as soon as the news came in.

“We learned lessons from the events of September 11 and produced 3,000 extra copies to be delivered in small vans and specifically targeted at certain venues.”

The normal City Final run had all but finished when the new version was ready so 3,000 extra were printed, with a new front page story and pictures.
