Newsroom staff set for triple mountain climb

More than 40 journalists have now signed up to take part in a high-rise charity event later this year, when they tackle The George Frew Memorial Three Peaks Challenge.

The event is being organised in honour of the former Western Daily Press features editor, who last year lost his battle with lung cancer.

  • George
  • Newsroom staff from across the country have been voluteering to take part.

Among those already committed are teams from the Bristol-based Western Daily Press and the Oxford Mail where George had previously worked.

But organiser Steve White, who worked with George in Bristol, says more teams are still needed to help raise thousands of pounds in sponsorship money for the Newspaper Press Fund and Cancer Research.

Steve said: “Teams have made inquiries from all over the place, including – of course – Bristol and Oxford where George is still remembered with great affection.

“I still haven’t heard anything from George’s native Scotland which is a shame. Are there any Scots up to a little mountain walking in aid of two very good causes?”

Steve is also seeking sponsors for the event, which he estimates will cost £3,000.

He said: “This would cover the food and accommodation at the end of the event for 80 people (60 participants and leaders/helpers) and the cost of hiring the expert leaders, which I think is crucial for an event of this type.”

The event will see teams of four – three walkers and one driver – climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon one after the other.

They will cover 26 miles of walking over difficult terrain, and another 500 miles of driving.

The walk is planned for the weekend of June 26 and 27, and is timed to start at first light on the Saturday and finish around lunchtime on the Sunday, with a celebration presentation party later that evening.
