Newspaper in remote video first as it mails report direct to web team at HQ

The digital team at Newsquest South London has turned “video mobile” – sending its first filmed report back to the office remotely.

Having moved from print to film, web reporter Daniel Knowles videoed the report on Met Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair response to the Stockwell 2 report in to the Met’s handling of events following the fatal shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005.

He edited on site with a laptop and e-mailed it back to the office.

Digital content editor Dan Menhinnitt posted the report on the www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk website as well as others run by the Newsquest South London group.

Afterwards, Daniel told holdthefrontpage it was “rather satisfying” to be able to walk past the major television networks with all their vans and heavy equipment, carrying only a camera and laptop bag, and be able to race them to putting up the video report.

He said: “The equipment we used was the Sony miniDV camera handed out to Newsquest video reporters and a standard office Dell laptop.

“It’s great to be able to go out and shoot a report, edit it there and then and get it back to the office before you do.”

Back at the office, Dan said the first remote video would pave the way for more.

“Now that we have got to grips with video reporting, we will be taking the next step of routinely filing remotely,” he said.

“With a patch like ours, where the traffic can add hours to when a report can be filed, it makes sense.”
