News in brief

The Argus is asking readers to send in their ideas for which famous citizens of Brighton and Hove should be immortalised in the town’s own Walk of Fame.
The Hollywood-style attraction, brainchild of the man who discovered Leo Sayer, will be at Brighton Marina, and could include local heroes Keith Waterhouse and James Herbert or Argus journalist for 40 years Adam Trimington, comics Jimmy Tarbuck and Bella Emberg.

The Sunshine Fund at the Newcastle Chronicle, which helps needy children, has received a £162,000 donation from the will of widow Ann Coleman, who died with no immediate family.
Editor Alison Hastings said: “We are still deciding what to do with it but we know it will make a huge difference to North East children’s lives. We are thrilled to receive such a donation.”

The Express and & Echo in Exeter is backing a call for a remembrance ceremony and permanent memorial to those who died in the wartime blitz that hit the city 60 years ago.
No formal event is planned for May3 and 4 and the names of the 265 men, women and children who died, exist only on paper in the Devon Record Office and in the minds of those who knew them.

The News & Star in Carlisle has come to the rescue of a European summit for more than 100 teenagers from all over the continent.
The European Youth Conference hung in the balance but with £500 from the News & Star, and a four-figure sum from the city council, the event can now proceed.

The Full Stop appeal in the Sheffield Star has raised £125,000, leaving the appeal to build a young people’s centre in the city at its half-way mark within seven months.
It will provide services to help children at risk of abuse, or those recovering from it. Figures reveal up to 15,000 local children could be suffering in silence.

An appeal in the Thurrock Gazette has resulted in a threat to the future of the town’s talking newspaper for the blind being lifted.
The group had a fortnight to find new premises after the owners of its current base could no longer lend the space, but an appeal in the paper brought an offer from the town’s courthouse, where a room has been set aside.
