News in brief

The Mid Devon Gazette has won an award for responsible journalism from a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender support charity.
Exeter-based charity Intercom Trust praised the way the paper handled a story about the concerns facing a gay couple living in Tiverton.
Reporter Alex Valk and editor Richard Best collected the award for the article which was said to be “responsible, well-informed and proportionate”.

The iconic sounds of a Newcastle Evening Chronicle street vendor shouting ‘Ronnie Gill’ could soon be heard around the world, after the cries were released as ringtone.
Readers can download the ringtone by texting a special number, and the paper is giving away cash prizes of between £50 and £500 to readers who approach the ‘street vendor of the day’, whose picture is published in the Chronicle, and play them the ringtone.
