The new Lord Mayor of Leicester has been shown the progress of refurbishment at the Mercury’s offices during her traditional tour of the newspaper.
Coun Mary Draycott was welcomed by managing director Tony Hill and editor Nick Carter, who gave her a tour of the newsroom and press hall.


The Newspaper Society’s annual Weekly Newspaper Awards are to be held on October 20 at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, near Coventry.
Paid-for and weekly titles will be given the chance to showcase the very best of their work.


Children from St Cuthbert’s infants school in Taunton visited the offices of Mid Somerset Newspapers to see how the operation takes place.
They were given a tour of the newsroom by editor Philip Welch, while reporter Carol Vincent explained the newsgathering process. They made sure the children remembered their day by handing them goodie bags as they left!


Issues of European law and how it affects the newspaper industry were discussed when publishers’ associations – including the Newspaper Society – met representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry.
Press freedom issues were also in the spotlight as the groups met Baroness Ashton for an update.


The Scotsman has reported that the newspaper of the future has been revealed by a team of Paisley scientists who have developed an iPod-style computer for reading.
They claim newspapers could be downloaded onto the all-conditions screen to get updates all day long.
