A new book on self-regulation of the press has been published by Richard Shannon, a professor of modern history at the University of Wales in Swansea.
The 400-page A Press Free and Responsible – Self regulation and the Press Complaints Commission 1991-2001 deals with the inside story of the battles of privacy laws during the first ten years of the PCC, and is published by with a cover price of £25. (ISBN 0719563216)


Western Mail health editor Madeleine Brindley was highly commended in the British Medical Association’s Medical Journalist of the Year Awards, which were won by john Carvel, of The Guardian.
Judges said of Madeleine’s work: “Her coverage of health and medical issues in Wales’ national paper is of a consistently high quality across a vast array of issues.”


The National Union of Journalists has launched a new online pay database so that workplace reps can access information at the touch of a button.
The new service can give details of pay agreements, including hours, holidays, allowances and other rates.


Huddersfield Examiner managing director Graham Morgan compered the newspaper’s annual Christmas concert at Huddersfield Town Hall.
The concert raised £3,642 for children’s hospice charity the Forget Me Not Trust.
