New presses show SMG commitment to Glasgow

The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times in Glasgow are to be printed at a £36m high-tech print works at the city’s Cambuslang Investment Park.

Planning permission has been agreed and the operation is set to move in autumn 2002.

The investment will be at the cutting edge of modern printing technology and bring to an end the Evening Times’ 20-year association with its former headquarters at Albion Street.

It follows the recent move to a new £16m company HQ in the city centre and Scottish Media Group say it demonstrates the firm’s continuing commitment to Glasgow. Construction is set to start in January.

SMG Publishing managing director Des Hudson said: “We are delighted to be able to retain our printing operations and more than 100 highly skilled jobs in the area.

“This site provides excellent communication and transport links to the city and throughout Scotland.

“Our recent investment in new printing presses will also make Cambuslang the most up to date newspaper printing facility in Scotland.”

SMG has recently invested in new presses for the Cambuslang facility.

For the technically-minded, the order, worth £18m, consists of two Colora Presses from KBA comprising of ten 4 backing 4 full colour units plus two 1 backing 1 units.

The presses have the capacity to deliver 75,000 copies per hour with full colour on 48 broadsheet pages while in collect mode. The maximum product is 192 pages tabloid with full colour throughout.

The presses will be shaftless, with 2 5 5 folders and fitted with the latest colour and cut off register controls.
