Eileen Green has been named the new editor of the Rutland and Stamford Mercury.

Currently deputy editor of the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, she will leave the Kettering-based title next month after winning her own editorship at one of the oldest newspapers in Britain.

Eileen said: “It’s quite an honour.

“It’s also a big responsibility to maintain the standards that have been set over so many years, but I am confident that I can take the title forward.”

Originally from Essex, Eileen, (49), began her career on weeklies in East London and Essex, before joining the Evening Echo in Basildon as a reporter.

She also worked as a sub-editor on Woman’s Own, and was deputy chief sub at the Oxford Mail before joining the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph in 1989 as production editor.

For the past 11 years she has been deputy editor, and has a key role in the paper’s production process.

Eileen said: “The Stamford Mercury has had a series of rises in circulation and I will be working to maintain that while giving the paper a more modern look.

“I’ve had a great time here, but this a great opportunity.

“Stamford is so lovely, it’s a beautiful place and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
