National paper follows a local lead

A swiftly-published denial in the Sevenoaks Chronicle of a Kenneth Noye story in The Mirror has finally encouraged a retraction from the national daily.

Once again it shows the nationals following up leads from the local press, where many of the big stories break.

The Mirror published an article in May alleging that jailed murderer Kenneth Noye had become a police informant in return for an early release.

Within hours of the story’s publication, Noye’s solicitor Henry Milner called the Chronicle to deny the story.

The Chronicle published the denial in its next issue but when its reporter contacted Mirror journalist Gary Jones, the writer of the original piece, he stood by his allegations.

Now the Mirror has finally printed a correction – admitting that Noye “has neither met nor made any request to meet police officers with a view to informing other criminals.”
