Media group will change its name

Shareholders at Ecng have backed the board’s bid to change the name of the company to Archant.

Ecng’s daily titles are the East Anglian Daily Times, Eastern Daily Press, Evening News (Norwich) and the Evening Star (Ipswich). Among the 60-plus weeklies are the Royston Crow, Weston & Somerset Mercury and the Ayrshire Leader Series.

The diverse group publishes 64 newspapers in all, and 45 monthly magazines as well as a number of annual publications. It hosts 40 separate websites.

The change was agreed as the company sought to better reflect its growing geographical spread and change in the scope of its activities.

Chief executive Peter Strong said: “We are no longer simply about newspapers, nor are our activities confined to the Eastern Counties, and we believe the new name, which will be applied to all our publishing companies across the UK, will give us greater national visibility and help us to grow.”

More than 95 per cent of voting shareholders backed the change, which is due to take effect early in March.
