Media clamour for weekly editor

Editor of the Matlock Mercury Don Hale has found himself in demand as speculation rises that his quest for justice for one of Britian’s longest-serving prisoners may be about to succeed.

Mr Hale believes that Stephen Downing has spent 27 years in prison for a murder he did not commit.

As reported previously on HoldTheFrontPage, the Criminal Cases Review Commission is now close to deciding whether the case should be referred to the Court of Appeal in London.

Mr Hale said: “I have been inundated with calls from nationals and BBC radio and television. An interview and film clip went out on Midlands Reports at lunchtime and in the main evening bulletin. BBC Radio Sheffield also did a live interview with me and the Downing family and the Sheffield Star is planning a major feature.”

Derbyshire MP Patrick McLoughlin has also added his support by putting further pressure on the authorities for a prompt decision from the CCRC.
