A new masthead for the Dudley edition of the Wolverhampton Express and Star pays tribute to the area by labelling it the “Capital of the Black Country”.

A member of the local history society wrote to the paper suggesting the new tag, which replaces “Dudley – your town, your news”.

The idea went to Express & Star managers who agreed it was a fitting tribute to the town’s heritage and future aims.

Historian George Blackham said: “Dudley has been referred to as the capital of the Black Country before but it had not been suggested to the Express & Star.

“I was amazed people had not picked it up before me.”
