Magazine 'first' for media volunteers

A group of volunteers from the media arm of volunteering and training charity Community Service Volunteers has launched a new magazine aimed at young people living in London.

MediaZINE is the first of its kind to be produced entirely by volunteers at the CSV Media Clubhouse in London, which is one of 10 centres across the country which offers media training to disadvantaged groups.

The new bi-monthly publication aims to give a voice to the communities of Islington, Camden, Hackney and Tower Hamlets, while educating and informing its readers.

The first issue includes an interview with Channel Four news presenter Jon Snow, who talks about his work as a volunteer as well as offering advice for young people wanting to get into journalism.

The magazine also has a feature article on how the health service and education system is failing the 9m deaf and hard of hearing people living in the UK, and a number of other interviews with high-profile media celebrities, such as Private Eye editor Ian Hislop, are also promised in later issues.

Editor Lena Lau said: “MediaZINE is a refreshing approach to community media that doesn’t preclude intelligence, talent and professionalism.

“It engages with other sides of the argument and we hope it will be part of a move towards community excellence.”
