Living like a Lord

There’s a new member of the aristocracy in Derbyshire today – the Derby Evening Telegraph has awarded the title of the Lord of the Manor of Smalley to the winner of its latest prestige competition.

The Telegraph’s Live Like a Lord contest, where a real title was handed out – found a winner in DHL team leader Jeffrey Hague.

He’ll enjoy a lordly lifestyle for the next 12 months with £23,000-worth of prizes.

The Telegraph bought the title at an auction of titles held earlier this year at London’s Barbican Centre and decided to give it away as a prize in the competition.

The contest sparked the imagination of readers, with more than 800 people collecting 18 out of 24 tokens printed in the Evening Telegraph and sending them in.

Jeffrey is already getting used to being treated as a member of the nobility.

He said: “After I found out that I had won I went into work as normal. My friend noticed that I seemed unusually happy, so I told him what had happened, but asked him not to mention it to anyone.

“Within the hour I went up to the canteen and was greeted by everyone in the room bowing and tugging their forelocks.”
