Learn or burn for Courier's Melanie

Newspaper staff turned daredevils to walk across broken glass and hotcoals to raise cash for a local hospice.

Kent and Sussex Courier news editor Melanie Whittaker was among 50 peoplefrom Tunbridge Wells who took part in the event, which involved striding outover a 20ft stretch of 1,000 broken bottles – or red hot glowing embers.

Those who took part had just an hour of relaxation training called ‘learnor burn’.

Melanie, who chose the 1,200ft fire walk, said: “I was not nervous atall – it was like walking on warm cotton wool.”

Motors field sales executive Malcolm Standerwick also took part, alongwith his daughter, raising £200 sponsorship from his loyal customers.

More than £13,000 was raised overall for the Hospice in the Weald andthose who took part received their official “Blaze certificate” soon after.
