Ins and outs of law explained

The Newspaper Society’s annual editorial law seminar will take place in London on November 23.

It is aimed at editors, journalists, journalism trainers and legal advisers with sessions presented by leading media lawyers experienced in advising newspapers, magazines and broadcasters.

The event will provide an update on legal developments and explain how and what news can be reported. It will outline the pitfalls, explain new legislation and illustrate how Press Complaints Commission decisions can affect what the media can lawfully report, and how it can be reported.

Speakers will cover anything from court cases and celebrity gossip to reporting on the security services during the current world crisis.

The sessions will include: defamation, the Official Secrets Act, court reporting restrictions, PCC update on self-regulation and privacy.

The seminar will be chaired by David Hooper, a partner at Pinsent Curtis Biddle, and discussion periods will follow each of the sessions.

Speakers will include:

  • Geraldine Proudler, partner, Olswang on defamation
  • Alastair Brett, legal manager, Times Newspapers Ltd, on the Official Secrets Act and ‘life long duty of confidence’
  • Richard Shillito, partner, Farrer and Co. with an update on contempt and court reporting restrictions
  • Professor Robert Pinker, privacy commissioner, Press Complaints Commission on self-regulation and application of the Editors’ Code
  • Julian Pike, partner, Farrer and Co. on privacy
