Kids produce spread every day of the week

The young and the old played key roles in the South Wales Argus’ coverage of Local Newspaper Week with more than 50 people who have been reading the Argus for 40 years or more being featured.

Four pages a day were devoted to the Newspaper Society-organised campaign with schoolchildren also featured heavily.

The veterans recounted their memories of the 109-year-old paper through most of the last century.

Each was presented with a framed copy of the front page of the Argus from the day they were born as a thank you.

And youngsters from five Gwent comprehensive schools produced a double-page spread each day of the week.

The pages were written, subbed and designed by the pupils, with help from Argus chief sub Caroline Woollard.

Their work is to be entered for a special Prince’s Trust award set up to mark Local Newspaper Week.

The Argus also featured articles from local politicians and celebrities, while advertising sections featured testimonials and other features to mark theweek.

Editor Gerry Keighley said: “This is the first time we have had a company-wide, co-ordinated approach to Local Newspaper Week.

“It was a huge success and the features written by pupils, along with the interviews with our most loyal readers, went down very well indeed.”
