The North Devon Journal teamed up with a local tourist attraction to host a day packed with family fun as an antidote to the doom and despair of the foot and mouth crisis.

The event was for farmers and their families and co-hosted by the National Farmers’ Union.

It brought up to 800 people together and gave them a chance to forget their worries for the day and enjoy a social event near the north Devon coast.

Trevor Stanbury, of the Milky Way park, said: “In times of trouble farmers tend to meet up at cattle markets to discuss their problems.

“But of course there were no markets because of foot and mouth disease so they have not had that chance to meet and chat.”
